Objective I
Construction of 20 demonstration rain water harvesting systems (storage and/or recharge) in rural schools.
35 schools were visited in Kilinochchi, Badulla and Moneragala district, 13 schools in Mulativu district data collected over the telephone and assessed for selection. 20 Schools were selected to provide 30,000 L RWHS.
21 awareness programs were conducted at 20 schools in Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Badulla, and Moneragala Districts
20×30,000 L RWHS constructions completed at schools . Each system consisting of Ferro cement tank, gutters first flush system, filters, and taps . 7912 students and teachers (4098 female, 3814 male) will receive safe drinking water source through RWHS.

20 O&M training programs conducted in Kilinochchi and Mulativu. 297 students and teachers participated.
School children RWH and home gardening project at their homes
06 Workshops on home gardening conducted in Kilinochchi Districts. 62 (26 male, 36 female) students were trained on how to
setup home garden and its management.
45 school students have started growing Brinjal, Chilli, Tomato, Beans, Guava and Tapioca, Long beans, Guava , Aloe vera, Gotukola, Tapioca , Chili, Drumstick, Brinjal, Sweet potato, Lady’s finger, White pumpkin, Pumpkin, Turmeric, Pineapple, Bitter gourd , Pomegranate , Ginger,Well penalla, Kowpi, Mung beans,cucumber, Turkey berry and Banana plants at their home premises
4 best home gardens were selected out of 11 home gardens established in Moneragala and Badulla District
Water Quiz
Water quiz Round 1 conducted in 27 schools in Badulla, Monaragala Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi Districts. 3535 students
participated water quiz program, their knowledge on water and environment been tested.
Construction of 228 Domestic Rain Water Harvesting Systems
08 1stawareness program were conducted to aware the community and 03 2nd awareness programs were conducted at Badulla, Moneragala and Kilinochchi Districts for selected beneficiaries. 206 Applications received and 76 households were selected from Vatavana,Thalangamuva village , Mahiyangana DSD . 133 Applications received and households were 76 selected from GNS , Wallawaya
DSD and Siyambalanduwa DSD. 111 applications received and 76 household beneficiaries were selected at Konavil East GND,Karachchi DSD.
236 x 8,000 L RWHS constructions were completed, each system consisting of Ferro cement tank, gutters, first flush system, filter and
tap.236 households ( 509 male,523 female) total 1032 beneficiaries will have access for clean drinking water
54 O & M training programs were conducted in Moneragala, Badulla and Kilinochchi District. 124 beneficiaries were trained on O&M of RWHS.
Financing HH RWH systems through loan scheme
Discussed with Samurdi Bank, Manager, Soranathota, Badulla , HNB bank, Head office , Vision Fund-Lanka, with North Development Cooperative bank on introducing financial scheme for RWH
100 well water recharge systems
109 separate wells recharge Systems completed at Kilinochchi, Moneragala and Badulla District. 860 ( 425 male, 435 female) people will benefit from improved well water levels
Set up mobile operation and maintainer’s unit
7 households were visited, and 02 repairs were done at Musarenpeti village, Kilinochchi District. 16 masons are nominated for NVQ training program in Badulla and Moneragala
Establish a pool of technical experts on RWH
04 RWH project proposals developed in 4 locations.
- RWHS for toilet use at State Printing Cooperation, Godagama
- RWHS for gardening use at Dr Priyani Amerasingh’sresidence at Thalawathugoda
- RWHS installation is ongoing at elder’s home in Pannipitiya
- NBRO group visited Wijaya Group Printers at Hokkandara on 12/01/2021.RWH for solar panel cleaning and toilet use at Wijaya Group Printers at Hokkandara was proposed
Research and Development – Groundwater recharge
24 recharge wells in Badulla, Moneragala, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu monitored its Wells water quality on pH, TDS and EC measured and well water levels are monitored twice a month.
Research and Development – Survey of existing RWH systems in other districts
15 Districts have selected for RWHS survey. They are as Ampara, Badulla, Batticaloa, Hambantota, Galle, Jaffna, Kaluthara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kilinochchi, Matale, Matara, Nuwaraeliya, Moneragla and Rathnapura District. Data collection 688 locations with RWHS and 22 non RWH users visited.
Develop a web based rainwater harvesting calculator
Spread sheet basis RWH and web basis calculator is designed using Oracle database. This calculator contains four types of calculations.

04 steering committee meetings were held to bring the inputs of SARNET members and spread awareness about the inaugural conference organised by SARNET. All meetings had participation of the identified members from Sri Lanka, India,Pakistan,Nepal and Bangladesh
The South Asia Rainwater Harvesting Network (SARNET) inaugural virtual conference, “Looming Water
Crisis and Climate Change in South Asia: Rainwater Harvesting as an Adaptation Strategy,” held on 14-16 September 2021. Over 500 participants consisting of professionals from the water sector development practitioners, academics, activists, government representatives, UN organizational representatives, journalists across South Asia, Europe and Africa attended this conference.
The SARNET planning meeting was attended by 27 SARNET members from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal held on 16/10/2021. The meeting comprised academics, policymakers, practitioners, and enthusiasts of rainwater harvesting. Recommendations were given related to networking, fundraising, knowledge sharing, and advocacy plans for SARNET.
