Project Components

Phase I
DatabaseThe first phase of the project will be building up a database on rain water harvesting in Sri Lanka. Information on different rain water harvesting practices in Sri Lanka, number of rain water harvesting systems and their locations, technical persons capable of constructing rainwater system will be collected.
ExhibitionModels and photographs of different rain water harvesting systems in Sri Lanka and around the world will collected for display at the center.
The different model on display will be for households, multi-story building, factories and public buildings as well as installations and products ect. Posters relating to rain water harvesting practices will be collected in all 3 different languages for displayed at the exhibition area.
Collection of VideoA video collection which brings together all available video material on rain water harvesting from Sri Lanka and around the world will be compiled. The center will file all media coverage of rain water harvesting in Sinhala, Tamil and English in the past ten years. These videos will be classified and catalogued.
LibraryThe Rain center will contain a library containing books, reports, conference proceedings, newspaper articles, magazines, manuals, brochures, research and policy papers, and other reading materials related to rain water harvesting from Sri Lanka and around the world.
It will also contain audio and visual materials. All materials will be catalogued and computerized for easy search of relevant materials.
Phase II
Rain CentreThe center will physically consist of an architecturally designed building with demonstration rain water harvesting facilities and other environmental conservation practices, such as solar power, biogas, Eco sanitation ect incorporated. The proposed site will be located in or near Colombo with easy access to public.
The Rain center will have the following facilities:
  • Exhibition center
  • Demonstration systems, Research & Development
  • Library
  • Workshop and Conference Facilities (Auditorium, Discussion committee rooms, etc)
  • Multimedia center with computer and internet facilities
  • Accommodation for limited number of guests
  • Office space
Rain Centre could play an important role in
  • Public awareness campaigns on rain water harvesting
  • Conducting training programs for Engineers, Architects, Draughtsman, Plumbers, Masons and Technicians
  • Providing information on rain fall patterns, benefits, best practices, financial assistance, technical support, lists of vendors and products, etc
  • Developing tools, templates and guidelines for building rainwater harvesting solutions
  • Conducting seminars and workshops on rainwater harvesting
  • Exhibiting models of different rain water harvesting systems for households, multi-story building, factories and public buildings, installations, products ect
  • Screening video’s and films to school children and public
  • Co-coordinating research and development on rain water harvesting technology
  • Collecting literature on rain water harvesting from around the world and maintaining a library for use by students, professionals and public
  • Maintaining a Data base on rural and urban rain water harvesting systems in the country and region
Creation of Web pageThe web-based learning center will be a dynamic and interactive web portal through which facilities available at the center as well as other information on rain water harvesting will be disseminated.

It will be both resources for information as well as an interactive experience especially targeted for children and youth. It will always try to get feedback from users and cater to their needs and interests.
Phase III
An Advisory CouncilAn advisory council consisting of 15 eminent professionals/entrepreneurs will be formed. Selection of council members will be based upon pre-planned criteria.

The council will meet with representation from the Board of Management on a quarterly basis to discuss ways of strengthening the presence, activities and service of the Rain center to community, the country and to the world at large. The council members will support the funding program for self-sustainability of the project.
