Two New Projects to be Implemented in Tsunami Affected Areas

Two new projects are to be implemented by the Lanka Rain Water Harvesting Forum (LRWHF) in Tsunami affected areas of Ampara District and in the Southern Province.

1. Project to Implement Rain Water Harvesting in Tsunami Affected Areas of the Ampara District

Rain Water Harvesting Forum will be implementing a Rain water harvesting project in tsunami affected areas of Periyanilaweli and Marathamunai in Ampara District.

This project is  funded by NWSDB/ DANIDA Tsunami Water project.

The main activity of the project is to:

  • Conducting awareness programs to the public, government/ non government officials
  • Establish 10 demonstration RWH systems in schools/ hospitals
  • Constructing 200 RWH units for domestic purposes in households
  • Establishing a newt work to share information and linking with relevant authorities

The project commenced on the 18th October 2005 and will be completed by 18th September 2006. The project activity will be handled by the LRWHF new branch office at 127, New Somanadhan Road, Pandirupu 1, Kalmunai, Telephone: 067-2220570.

2. Project to Implement Rain Water Harvesting in Tsunami Effected Areas of the Southern Province

Rainwater Harvesting Forum will be implementing a  project to introduce rain water harvesting for drinking purposes in tsunami effected areas of Galle, Matara and Hambantota. The project is funded by Malteser and UNICEF.

The main activity of the proposal is to:

  • Conducting awareness programs in each district
  • Training pool of masons in each district
  • Rehabilitating existing RWH systems
  • Establishing 3-4 resource Centers fro Rain water harvesting in each district
  • Constructing 3000 RWH units for domestic purposes in all 3 districts
  • Establishing a newt work to share information and linking with relevant authorities

The project commenced on the 1st January 2006 and will be completed by 31st December 2009. Initial survey to identify the beneficiary households has been completed. Project office will be established at Hambantota.
